About Hippopotamuses

Hippopotamuses are some of the most fascinating creatures in the animal planet. Known scientifically as Hippopotamus amphibius, these large, mostly aquatic mammals are native to sub-Saharan Africa and is often referred to as the “river horse” due to its Greek name which translates to “water horse.” Hippopotamuses, or Hippos for short, are incredibly powerful yet graceful.

Hippopotamuses are the third-largest land mammals on Earth, after elephants and white rhinoceroses. Adult males can weigh up to 3,300 pounds and females, are just slightly smaller, weighing around 2,800 pounds. They have barrel-shaped bodies, hairless grayish-brown skin, short legs and huge mouths.

Despite their size, hippopotamuses are quite agile and can run at speeds of up to 19 miles per hour on land. This makes the hippopotamus one of the fastest large animals in the world.
